Operating in both the etheric and astral fields, the major chakras aligned along the spine have an entirely different role to the purely etheric ones. They are multi-dimensional in nature and translate energies between the energy bodies, stepping  it up or down in frequency or vibrational rate, to be used at the appropriate level.  They are therefore considered to be centres of consciousness and each one can rotate in either direction (clockwise - anti-clockwise), or indeed in all directions simultaneously, albeit at  different rates.  The table below shows the relationship between these major centres and the physical body, together with their notional colour.  For the purposes of symbolism there is an association between the progression of rainbow colours and each chakra, however any colour can be normal when associated with a chakra as it describes the way energies are being expressed in the life of the person involved.
In the Etheric body there are said to be 72,000 chakras.  Think of a traffic system and it is easy to imagine that the etheric chakras are like roundabouts in that they spin in one direction only and act as energy shunts, moving energy along the meridian lines that are the roadways.  Just as roads and roundabouts can be small or large depending on the amount of traffic they carry, so too with these etheric chakras and the meridians they serve.
